Previously known for vivacious animal portraits and illustrative work, I am currently channeling the skills, knowledge, and understanding gained from a dedicated realism practice into an exploration of abstraction. Although all my paintings at present include horses, I do no not consider my work to be about horses per se. Rather, I use horses as a scaffold on which to hang my artistic ideas.
I grew up in Boulder, Colorado and have lived in Houston, Texas; Portland, Oregon; upstate New York; and Denver, Colorado. I also tried, and failed, to live in Bologna, Italy. Other artistic paths I have pursued include participating as a member of an art collective in Colorado called Kallisti Kollective, illustrating concert posters and CD covers (back in the days of CDs), painting commissioned animal and child portraits, and tattooing. I currently tattoo at Bound by Design, a shop on Capital Hill in Denver where I have worked for the past twelve years.
My abstract paintings, featured on this website, feel like a breath of fresh air to me. I have spent most of my life doing illustrative work, intent on achieving a sense of realism and agreeable beauty, but I now find it so much more fun, and more challenging, to follow the path of abstraction. And it is a sort of “following.” I don’t know where it will lead me, artistically, and that is what I love so much about it: adventure.
